The AJS Challenge

The Collier Brothers, who in 1931 became owners of AJS, were also aware of an increased challenge to British racing supremacy. European manufacturers were not slow to adopt supercharging to enhance their machine’s performance over normally-aspirated British designs. Leading German contenders BMW, DKW and NSU all received generous Government support in their racing endeavours; as was being given to Mercedes Benz and Auto Union in motor car Grands Prix. Without British government support, AJS took the bold step to produce a racing edition of their advanced touring model first revealed at the 1935 Olympia motorcycle show. Their new design was an air-cooled 500cc V-4; featuring overhead-camshafts and twin carburetors; significantly it was intended to be supercharged.

Unsuccessful Debuts

Two of the new ‘fours’ appeared at the 1936 Senior TT, ridden by George Rowley and future Norton star, Harold Daniell; but with no success at all. The machines showed a distinct reluctance to stay on four cylinders and at times they resisted all attempts to re-start following pit stops. After the 1936 debacle, the project was shelved for 12 months; however the fractious V-4 re-appeared in 1938, this time with forced induction. Again it was a failure; proving exceedingly fast on the straights, but lacking in acceleration to negotiate the tortuous and hilly Island circuit.

1939 TT Series

Overheating was also a major factor in their poor performance; and in an attempt to overcome the problem, for 1939 the unit was converted to water-cooling and housed in a new spring-frame. During TT practice sessions the team was plagued by problems with blown cylinder-head gaskets. These were eventually overcome, and two machines ridden by Walter Rusk and Bob Foster did hold together for the seven-lap Senior, to finish in 11th and 13th places respectively.
