People merely standing on the side of the road shouldn't have to worry about intoxicated drivers crashing into them. Unfortunately, it does happen. A tragic accident earlier this month illustrates that point.
A woman who crashed into two people while driving in Medford is facing a vehicular manslaughter charge. The 45-year-old woman apparently had Xanax and other medications in her system at the time of the fatal car accident, according to a toxicology test.
The crash occurred on New Year's Eve. A woman and her 40-year-old daughter were reportedly standing behind a car parked on the shoulder of Horseblock Road in Medford. The driver struck them, and the daughter later died at a hospital as a result of her injuries.
According to Patch.com, the woman was to be charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter today after a grand jury indictment was unsealed. That's a class C felony. She had previously pleaded not guilty to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. She was unable to post bail of $150,000.
The woman was to be arraigned in Suffolk County Criminal Court on the upgraded charges. She could face up to 15 years in prison.
She's not the only one facing such charges. Patch.com also reports that a Ronkonkoma man is facing a vehicular homicide charge for a crash that killed a 5-year-old boy. The man was apparently on prescription drugs at the time of the accident.
It's yet another example of a tragedy that could have prevented if precautions had been taken.
