In the late fifties and early sixties, journalism was in the middle of a new era. With the increasingly expanding popularity of “the novel”, a new form of writing, which had been raped and controlled by an elite type of writer known as “The Novelist”, journalists found themselves stuck in a state of career shock. The styles of the typical journalist were slowly being altered into that of new form. The old ways were dying, and a new beast known simply as “New Journalism” or “Para Journalism”, was taking readers by storm.

Out of the midst of this new wave of reporting came a new breed of journalist, a soldier of the press. Tom Wolfe is often said to be the father of New Journalism, yet even in his own writing he’s quoted as saying “I have no idea who coined the term ‘The New Journalism’.” Nonetheless, he played a huge role in developing what we now know as “New Journalism”. However New Journalism is not what this essay is about. In fact it is merely one of the first steps of the ladder known as Gonzo Journalism and everyone knows who the father of Gonzo is: Hunter S Thompson, a writer from Louisville, Kentucky who found himself on a quest to pioneer something far more imaginative than typical journalism. What he developed was basically character-based journalism.
